First, check to see what your current TTL is. If you aren't sure, let us know the
domain and we can check for you. This is typically 1-2 days. Once you are this close
to the switchover, you should change the TTL down to say 1 hour. Then, when you are
ready, make the MX record change, and change the TTL back to what it was before.
If you do this as described, then all DNS servers will get the new MX record within an
hour of the change. You could, an hour before the change, lower the TTL down to say 1
second, if you wanted to be really cautious. The lower the TTL, the more the DNS
traffic, however.
