There is ALWAYS a need to have the correct data in the HOSTS file! It is
checked by the OS, before DNS, so can confuse the situation if it contains
the wrong data (and NT is pretty bad at getting the correct data in it,
especially if the hostname, domain or IP have changed in the life of the
computer!). And if for some reason DNS (or the network connection) is not
working, the host may not be able to resolve itself without good data in the
file.
Working web pages is good, but not proof of a fully working network.
If it took an install to fix the trouble and a restart did not, that might
indicate corruption of program files. Check the hard disk, especially if the
problem re-occurs.
You indicate that removing domain aliases 'fixes' the problem. I've not seen
or heard of that having any effect, except to accept and direct email to a
particular domain. By any chance did you have an alias that matched a
different domains OHN? That could cause mail to be mis-directed.

I just upgraded to 6.06

I haven't network problems as web pages working fine from both inside and
outside my network , also I can traceroute successfully from yahoo .
* Did you try testing after restarting the computer before the
uninstall/re-install? yes I did and didn't work !
I removed all domain aliases and it's working fine now (or at least till now
!) .
