That' not quite true. In this case, it might have been a freak but I do not
clean my mailboxes and the nbx file is created and nothing goes wrong.

Question/Problem: I see a file named main.nbx. What is it?
Answer/Solution: In some circumstances IMail will create main.nbx if it
cannot write to main.mbx when new mail arrives. IMail should take care of
this file in time but you can rename it (to other.mbx for example) or delete
it (if it does not contain messages you care about).

The problem is:
When a mailbox has an unfinished or damaged message and you start the
cleaning program: immsgexp.exe on this mailbox - it creates main.nbx and
writes the damaged message to it over and over again. It stops when the disc
is full.
What can be done about it?
