It may be that 5.05 requires all data to be sent in a single packet. When
first writing Internet software, it's easiest to assume that all data will
be in one packet ("HELO mydomain.com", rather than "H", "E", "L", "O",
etc.). When you use telnet, typically each character is sent in a separate
packet (or a few grouped together: "HEL", "O ", "mydom", ...).
