You'll need to take a look at the log file to get an idea of what happened.

There is one legitimate reason for duplicate messages (many people don't 
realize this):  If the TCP/IP connection is lost somehow after the E-mail 
is finished sending (technically, a "." on a blank line sent after the end 
of the message) and before the remote SMTP server can respond that it 
received the E-mail, the E-mail should be sent again (since the local SMTP 
server can't be sure that the remote server got the last packet).
