We were trying to decide if we should assign PTR
records a couple years ago, and we decided to assign them, primarily because not
assigning them can affect the quality of many of the services an ISP is
providing (for example, mail in this case; also, customers whose dialup IP's
don't have associated PTR records often can't FTP to remote sites or download
software, etc.).
We chose to assign the PTR records and work on securing our
servers against attack by tightening the OS, applying patches, securing
permissions, etc.
Good luck,
Adam
