I couldn't let this one get past me. First, I asked the same question here
recently, and the almost unanimous answer was to not do an upgrade, but to
do a fresh install. Most people were pretty adamant. However, I also spent
time talking to MS's techs, looking at the experiences of the consulting
half of our company, and talking to others with experience. In those
places, the majority ruled in favor of upgrade over fresh install, and MS
was almost insistent. So I guess the results (and preferences) will vary by
person and situation.
Now the part that I really object to is the concept that Win2k is going to
be obsolete because WinXP will be out. Heaven forbid any of us should
accurately predict the future in this business, but I have no faith in WinXP
at all. When I talk to people, I hear them saying "we just got used to
Win2k, we're just now moving our servers over" and so on. I don't know of
*anyone* anxious to switch to XP. Given MS's new licensing/activation plan,
I'm not sure the product will get broad acceptance at all. There is no
doubt in my mind that it's better to upgrade to Win2k now than to wait for
XP later.
