I've seen this problem with broken MTA's for a long time. So I usually
set them up as:
mydomain.com. MX 10 mail.mydomain.com.
mydomain.com. A 1.2.3.6
www.mydomain.com A 1.2.3.4
mail.mydomain.com. A 1.2.3.6
The web site for mydomain.com contains an "all unknown" redirector .ASP
page to send them to www.* where * was the domain name the user entered.
And if mail accidentally delivers to the "A" record, it ends up in the right
place. It seems to work ok.
