I've found Imail works as well as any product. It's usually the firewall config that causes the problems. ;)

Info on the ports Imail uses (straight from the KB):

Imail and firewalls don't mix very well.  Just had to throw in my two cents.

We use Imail version 6.06 behind a firewall. Though internal users can access their mailboxes through internet external users do not. I open port 143 (imap) to firewall for both directions. We try port 8383 and 80 to the Web server to Imail. Still didn't work.
 
Do I miss something ? Please help....
