Only virus scanners that are specifically set up to handle mail server
traffic will reliably catch viruses going through a mail server. That's
because the viruses in E-mail are encoded, and AV companies know there are
big bucks to be found in scanning E-mail, and don't want a $20 program to
do the same job their $20,000 program is doing.
The one main exception (aside from using a third party program, such as
ours, to do the decoding) is that a standard virus scanner can catch
viruses in attachments sent via web messaging (since these are stored
temporarily in the raw format on the hard drive).
