what version of Imail are you using?  here is a fix that can be applied to
Netscape that prevents SMTP from Authenticating.  On older versions of Imail
you can also check off "disable SMTP auth reporting" in control panel | smtp
Security.

user_pref("mail.auth_login", false);
Netscape Note: Netscape by default requires you to give a username and
Password because it detects that smtp supports authenticated SMTP. 
Completely close all Netscape windows. 
Edit your prefs.js file and add the line:
user_pref("mail.auth_login", false);
Your prefs.js file is usually located at:
C:\Program Files\Netscape\Communicator\Users\<profilename>\prefs.js  

This prevents Netscape from forcing you to authenticate

Try checking your flags in Imail Admin.  Some flag settings conflict with
different mail clients.  I had the exact opposite problem (my Netscape
worked, but Outlook didn't).  Worth a shot.
