I believe that ESMTP will display (immediately after the EHLO) information 
that includes the maximum size of the E-mail that can be accepted, so that 
the mail client can escape at that point without wasting the bandwidth.  Of 
course, not all E-mail clients would be so kind, but it would kind down 
quite a bit on the waste.
