I went through the same thing.  It turns out that the checkbox on
the SMTP tab is doing the opposite of what's intended.

"Send all remote mail through gateway" - if checked doesn't
"Send all remote mail through gateway" - if unchecked does

Mine's checked and all mail gets delivered directly, without going
through a gateway.

We have the same problem with imail. Our Lotus Domino box sends through
NAVGW.
