I did the same thing, thought following the manual was the right way to go.
I set all my IP domains to

OHN = mail.domain.com
Alias  = domain.com

We set our virtual domains opposite (helps us find them easily in
administrator)

So, Len, your saying that changing them all to

OHN = domain.com
Alias = mail.domain.com

Is a bad idea?   I noticed you can change OHN in administrator, assume there
is a registry hach OR delete and re-create the host.
