I think that can happen when you do an Init LDAP through the administrator server.  
That's what happens here anyway.  Performing the init deletes the existing data in 
person.dta and sets the attributes according to the registry
valuse (at least for us as we use the registry for users)

End result for us is what you have seen.

You might want to look at whats in the person.dta file for your users 
    (imail/ldap/person.dta)  

I have an asp script that reads through the person.dta and generates an LDAPER batch 
file that I can run to reload our users in the event the file gets corrupted. 

If you'd like the script, e-mail me offline and I'll send it.  I am still on 6.06 so I 
am not sure it they have changed the structure of the person.dta file so you'd have to 
make sure it's correct for V7.x.
