Microsoft's SMTP service *is* installed by default on Windows 2000, whether 
or not you ask it to.  So you should double-check that it is not running.

You've got a very weird problem -- both SMTP and POP3 are answering with 
pure garbage (not even including the CRLF at the end of the greeting).  If 
you're sure the Microsoft SMTP service isn't running, I'd try reinstalling 
IMail, in case there is a corrupt file.
