MIke, I had this same message in my logfiles and if IIRC it had to do with the DNS setting for my mail server. Here's what I think happened in my case:
On a send from my server to remote: Contacted the remote server for delivery remote server did a reverse IP lookup on my server for verification My in-addr record was not there and it timed out I saw the log entries you describe in the log. On my system the error records they were 4 minutes after the last log entry for the delivery process. I found out that the remote server could not look up the PTR record for my server and was timing out. Make sure you have a PTR record for your server and that may fix it.
