For some, a little RAID 1 box over 100Base-T would be fine (but why someone would choose that route over local drives is a bit beyond me, since you rarely get component-level redundancy there, but could get it on a full-fledged server). For others, a high-end NetApp type ($$$) would be called for to make you not lose your mind over performance degradation. And for some, a NAS won't work and only a SAN will give you both distributed storage and high enough performance.
