The problem is that the client isn't attempting to use SMTP AUTH.
Either the mail client isn't set up to use SMTP AUTH, or you've got
something nasty interfering -- do you have a firewall set up to play games
with SMTP? If you have a firewall that changes even a single byte, you're
outside the IMail realm and need to either disable the firewall games, or
deal directly with the firewall people. Firewalls that fool around with
SMTP are notorious for breaking things.

This *definitely* sounds like a firewall issue.
