>xx% IMAIL not correctly configured

somewhat, basically self-inflicted, due to not having read the docs, and
not having any experience with mail systems.

>xx% IMAIL working fine, typical errors and administration to blame

as above

>xx% IMAIL version patches not installed

usually after a x.0 release, can last up to x.09 :))

>xx% Mail corrupted before it reaches IMAIL

rare, but "killer messages" can screw up Imail's sending

>xx% Hardware not configured properly or incompatible with IMAIL

rare

Your DNS and the DNS of other domains is a frequent cause of screw ups.

We seem to have had a spate of firewalls with brain-dead SMTP proxies, and
Imail admins who don't know about them.

Defending against mail abuse is ongoing and cleaning up after abuse can be
horrendous if you get violated. Some SMTP DoS can be almost impossible to
defend against. Assume they will happen to you.

Some of the nastiest admin problems to deal with are Imail services that
quit or consume the machine for no apparent reason, often after a long
period of flawless operation. I put it down to the amateur design and
instability of the MS platform (basically a desktop OS) combined with
3rd-party, non-MS applications that don't have access to the full API and
OS source code.
