FreeBSD and Linux installed on 486/66, 32 megs (if you can still find one) 
works great for a learning machine, and some IMGate users (uh, me) use them 
for production machines.

Pickup a small thinkpad on ebay for a couple of $100, slip in a enet 
card... You can take it to bed wid ya

also, www.cygwin.com has a quite complete and free Unix environment for 
Win32, and active users mailing lists, if you want to learn the *nix 
commands, shell scripting, ssh, etc, etc.

Put a 486/66 (no crt, no kbd, no mouse after installation) on your LAN and 
SSH into it from your Mac or Win machine.

Really no need to spend ANY money (oh, how un-American is that!!)
