Try a product called JMail.  It is free.  it has a method that you can
retrieve all of the unread messages.  You can then take the count property
and use that to find out how many new messages that there are.

I am trying to use this now.  The problem is that i am not sure how to mark
them as read.  I know Sandy said that when the message is retrieved it
changes, but it doesn't seem to be recognized as read.

I may be doing something wrong, but you are welcome to give it a shot.
