Sorry for the OT post, but perhaps the general troubleshooting advice I
get on this might help with Imail as well. I haven't been able to find
any resources on the web that are any more relevant than this one to ask
my question, so here it goes.

I have a client who ran into sudden connectivity problems, and asked me
to host their Mailmax email domains. They didn't (don't) want to move
from Mailmax to Imail due to difference in how all of the clients would
need to be set up. So besides my Imail setup, I also run Mailmax on a
different server to host my client's domains.

Here is the problem. All of a sudden all emails to a particular outside
domain will bounce back with a 550 - "The 'To' address
[EMAIL PROTECTED] was rejected by the remote server" message. Once
this starts, no account on any domain sending mail through Mailmax will
be able to send to any account on the remote domain. However, any other
destination other than that one remote domain will work just fine.

The fix is easy; I simply restart the Mailmax services, and mail to the
remote domain works again. However, the only way I know that there is a
problem is when some calls and says that there is a problem.

I have done the following troubleshooting.

When a remote domain is "frozen" to accounts sending through MailMax,
accounts on my Imail server are able to send to the remote domain just
fine.

The MailMax logs show this:

02/19/02 09:13:45 1644 SMTP CONN 208.151.247.227
209.83.80.198 Connect
02/19/02 09:13:47 1644 SMTP DATA 208.151.247.227
209.83.80.198 mail from: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
02/19/02 09:13:49 1644 SMTP DATA 208.151.247.227
209.83.80.198 rcpt to: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
02/19/02 09:13:49 1644 SMTP DATA 208.151.247.227
209.83.80.198 2541 bytes received
02/19/02 09:13:49 1644 SMTP DCON 208.151.247.227
209.83.80.198 Disconnect

However, I had a remote domain admin look at their logs, and they show 0
activity for the sending IP or domain name anywhere near that time. They
are convinced that during that time, Mailmax did not say boo to the
remote server.

Mailmax also has a "spy app", which can create a log file. Here is that
output:

02/19/02 11:36:17 4464 QueMax(04702068): Send Failed: The 'To'
Address [EMAIL PROTECTED] was rejected by server

Finally, while not being able to send via Mailmax to a particular
domain, I have been able to successfully send a simple email message via
telnet to that domain from the physical Mailmax server.

My conclusion: something is causing Mailmax to block a domain. The only
way to undo this invisible block is to restart the service. As this is
unacceptable behavior, Mailmax needs to go away and everyone will be
happier.

Mailmax support is stumped, but they want to blame my DNS. I find this
hard to believe since my Imail setup uses the same DNS.

If anyone can provide any advice, troubleshooting tips, magic spells or
whatever, I would be most appreciative. My goal at this point is to
either fix the problem, or gather more information that would help prove
that this software is defective.

Thanks,

Paul Navarre
