That is correct.

They do not need to use web messaging.  You can either have them set up 
their mail client to use their ISP's mail server (usuaully the best option, 
since many ISPs now block E-mail to other mail servers), or they can enable 
SMTP AUTH in their mail client (usually by checking a box that says "My 
server requires authentication").
