Although you are correct in that forcing users to authencate to relay mail that didn't used to have to do that will bring in an increase in support calls - the sitution here is that it's well worth it.
We forced about 700 seperate email accounts to authenticate before relaying their mail and received calls for support from about 40 of our customers. The solution to eash was just hand-holding them through the process. In my opinion, without the extra cost or need to adminster additional software, the authenticate option worked best for us, but your milage may vary. I just recommend that you not discount this method too easily as I feel much better knowing that the email server is secure now against relaying.
