IMail takes care of it. I don't recall exactly how, but you can send

What effect were you looking for? Deleting the .uid file should have no
effect, as IMail will recreate it. Or do you mean that you added an E-mail
to the .mbx file, and then deleted the .uid file, and then when IMail
recreated the .uid file it didn't include your E-mail?

It is an index file. I don't recall exactly how it is set up (you can
figure it out with a little work) but yes, it includes the location of each
E-mail (I think the location is the number of bytes into the file).
