IE treats the unqualified address (the second one) as an Intranet site
and  is  likely configured to avoid the proxy for such sites. When you
call  it  by  its full name, it's no longer recognized as being on the
Intranet, so it goes through the proxy like everything else.

Add  the  entire 'imailserver' prefix to the IE treat-as-local list in
Internet Options.
