I  think Christopher's note about aliases related to local aliases for
remote  addresses--which  is an interesting exception that can only be
disabled by changing the Reg.

This  will  indeed  work  quite  well, provided the "point of contact"
account  you  mention  later is first denied Host Administrator privs!
(Which would have let it re-enable the disabled accounts.)

Even  with the change to the Registry, you could still add a "point of
contact"  account  back  in  strategically,  either  by adding it to a
general  domain  through a host alias or by adding the original domain
in  as  an  empty  domain.  Because of this very issue, I do set up my
administrative accounts to be at a special internal domain--and unable
to   receive  mail  from  outside--so  I  can  make  sure  the  domain
registration  is  always current and I can always send to the mailbox.
Users  often  request a forward on the account, but I always leave the
mail in the dedicated mailbox as well.
