make sure the mailqueue is empty, stop smtp, change the spool setting, start smtp. the spool is a very busy directory, many file create/deletes, so defrag can be a huge problem, so try to put the spool dir on its own dedicated partition. The worst you can do is put the spool directory in the same partition with the mailbox directories. best is to have the spool and mailbox directories on separate controllers and disks in dedicated partitions.
