Am using Registry, and have 1gb RAM and never cross 300 mb used. I have about 200 users sending/receiving about 2-3000 pieces daily.
My entire Imail tree totals 89 mb. I keep lids of 6mb on most accts, and discourage webmail use, but I'd better go in and look those over. I keep a pretty close watch on my spool dir. No msgs stay in there for very long, anyway. Move out old logs almost daily. This wound up happening to a mail acct I was using, so I was able to debug a bit. I found that if I set up a scheduled task to restart the mail service hourly, the problem disappears. Now that I know restarting works, I'll tinker up a reset interval that's less drastic. Server busyness will be worsened : by badly fragmented disks, by users have huge .mbx files, by spool/ dir's filled with 1000's of stale/crap files, by the server being forced to swap at a continuously/high rate due to memory shortages. a large number of concurrent webmail users paging through their huge mailbox files, meaning horrendous disk i/0 and memory usage/swapping. who knows what else.... Sandford, does it make any sense to defrag the registry? I know it's a pretty good B-tree implementation, but you never know with MS.... If so, how does one do that?
