sounds like the "killer message syndrome".

move, don't copy, all files from spool/ to spool/save (no msg lost)

reboot the box (fastest way to kill the zombies)

new mail will flow ok

Then copy back the saved message files from spool/save to spool/, in 
groups, until the box starts screwing up again, and then you know the kille 
msg was in the preceding group.
