I'm feeling too tired to actually comment on the rest .. but: Running raid5 for all of the drive space is really a waste. There's a few things to keep in mind with regards to mail servers. 1. If user mail stores are important, then yes, run that on raid5. 2. If performance of the server is important, then no .. dont run your spool files in raid5. Move these to a faster raid, spanning it over multiple spindles with no redundancy or recovery. True, a hardware failure will mean loss of current spool files, but is this fraction in time important to you? If performance is a concern, I'd say this is an issue. 3. Its nice to have your system pagefile on another spindle .. 4. Its nice to have your OS on a separate drive .. doesn't need to be insanely fast, just another spindle.
