Sorry if my original question seemed vague; it was written in mid-crisis. I've
determined there are
two problems. The first turned out to be a corrupt file in the spool, as referenced in
Ipswitch
article at ...
http://support.ipswitch.com/kb/IM-19990608-DM01.htm
The apparent conflict between IMail and Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition was an
incorrect
conclusion I drew. Yes I know NAVCE is not appropriate on a mail server; we're
preparing to purchase
either the Norton "Gateway" product or Declude.
That leaves the second problem; the altered relay setting. It coincides with an
unexplained increase
in traffic on the same firewall that was referenced in the altered setting. Firewall
reports
couldn't identify exactly what that traffic was; the total bytes for my users was much
less than the
overall total. So I changed the password for both the mail server and the firewall,
causing the
total traffic to drop down to one-third of the previous amount. Am I being paranoid to
consider that
suspicious?

This morning I did my daily check of the mail server (IMail 7.12) and found a
half-dozen Dr. Watson
messages. They were not very informative but appeared to suggest a conflict between
IMail and our
anti-virus software. They also said more information was written to the application
log. I closed
all the boxes. Unfortunately I didn't find any more detail in the application log. The
anti-virus
software didn't yield any information either. Then I started getting calls from
managers and others
saying they weren't getting email. I couldn't find anything wrong in the IMail
administrative
console. All services seemed to be running.
The only thing out of whack was that my mail relay
setting in SMTP had been changed from "No mail relay" to "Relay mail for [local IP
address for our
firewall]". I changed it back to "No mail relay" and then rebooted the server. Email
seems to be
working again. But messages sent and received in the last 24 hours seem to have
disappeared. I don't
know what to make of all this. Suggestions?

"Appeared" how?

Which anti-virus software?

Are you running any mail server AV software (Declude Virus, IMail
AntiVirus, WebShield SMTP, etc.), besides a standard AV program (which
protects the server, rather than stopping viruses in E-mail)?
