I've noted that response-times vary for our DNS systems -- and find myself
shifting
my Imail systems to an alternate DNS (manually) in order to keep the mail
flowing.
We have a set-up similar to Markus (one DNS with a lot of primary zones, two
additonal DNS with secondaries to the primary system) As we've been
experimenting
with a unix-based MTA, we've set up a recursive caching DNS on the MTA and a
iterant DNS on a second RH 7.3. Both are using BIND 8, I believe. In
addtion to these, I occasionally bring our provider's load-balanced DNS into
the mix.
What I've not discovered is the how/why a particular DNS slows down. It is
completely intermittent and without any reason I've been able to determine
(yet).
My assumption is that I need to insure that DNS queries from our internal
network do not tie up those servers that I've pointed Imail at. Again, so
far... it still seems intermittent, performance-wise.
