I should have answered this more fully I think because it does seem
reasonable.

I had this idea once and tried it. But it didn't work the way I had
thought it would. Instead of the non-recursive DNS server forwarding
an initial query to another DNS server that would do recursion I
actually ended up at the next alternate DNS server.

So I then tried removing all alternates but I never made the
non-recursive DNS server forward the recursive query - just timed out
and never got an answer period.

So maybe there is a way to make this work but I never discovered in
practice how to do it.

I tried it with Microsoft DNS as well as another DNS program but I may
have had something wrong in both cases.
