Terry Fritts,

1) When I go through the article
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q196453 and run
sysedit.exe, it         was starting fine.

        When I search for the Config.nt file
        I found two files Config.nt files one under C:\WINNT\System32 and second
under C:\WINNT\repair

        The text under Config.nt shows the following

        dos=high, umb
        device=%SystemRoot%\system32\himem.sys
        files=40

        Do we need to add a additional line shell=%SystemRoot%\system32\command.com
/e:4096

2) As per the second article SharedSection=1024,3072,512 is there by
default, I hope they fixed this in Win SP3.
        http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q184802

Please help me to avoid ntvdm.exe and smtp errors.

Thank you
Balaji.

I fought this problem for a long time. Since taking the following
steps I've not had a single alert box and that's been about a month
now:

    I found this from Microsoft
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q196453
    I edited my Config.nt file
    and set  files=60
             shell=%SystemRoot%\system32\command.com /e:4096

    changed registry per
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q184802
    My last change to SharedSection was 1024,3072,128 but I'd tried all
    other numbers. I've reset it to SharedSection=1024,3072,512.

    My SMTP processes is at 30.
