believing the bookkeeping process takes a month or more over at Network
Solutions.

I can say that I have been burned by snap-whomever. A domain name on Net
Sol was not reregistered. The week after it expired, I tried to register
it. No go. Net Sol was holding it. Net Sol told me it would be about 3
weeks for paperwork. I registered with snap-whomever and paid the price
up front for the registration that day. The very next day, the domain
name was suddenly registered by some one else.
