Are the alternate MXes all the same preference? I think if all MXes are the same
preference then any SMTP server will not try alternate, it is more a random
round-robin thing. However if the alternarte MXes are using higher preference then
alternate attempts should be made in the order of preference.

I've got a very simular issue with IMail. When a servers primary mx is
down.. either IMail won't/can't, or is incapable of sending email to the
next available server. For those that can help try sending a test email to:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] - this is the national repair center for adelphia
business solutions. There main email server is down.. and imail won't send
to their alternet ones..

I have been having the same problems. I get MX failures every time
somebody sends to (not so)hotmail and I have no other problems send to
other servers. I am hoping that they get out of the email biz. I am
tired of troubleshooting all the problems (not so)hotmail and Passport
have at my other job.
