If your cpu usage is averaging 40 percent your box is overloaded. Sustained cpu usage that high will really slow things down but I imagine the real culprit is the monitor service. If it polls the smtp service with usage that high it will eventually crash it. I was having the same problem until I figured it out. I turned off the monitor service on 08/03/02 and smtp hasn't failed yet. Before that it was every three days.
