Hello,

Over the past week or so I have seen some treads that make me
wonder about a couple of things.

First yes there are new people to the tech industries here and they
do have every right to ask questions with out being slammed.
If they are aviling themselves to learn.

Look I did the career change thing 4 years ago from Making Cabinets
for 16 years to going back to college and working full time and self
pacing tech stuff. I am not trying to blow my own horn.

But I would like to compare this to when I was a supervisor at a very
large High end cabinet shop I would hire helpers with
no experience. I EXPECTED they would get wood working mags, go to
the library and ask to go to seminars or show when every they
could. Let me tell you I never mind a dumb question once but not
about the same thing twice! Also if the person made no effort to
better themselves they where gone at the 90 day period.
Yes some stayed helpers other have gone on to make very excellent
  craftsman.

So what am I getting at.
This it seems this list is known for the wealth knowledge and it has
that and it usually will help with OT topics, but if anyone guru or
newbie alike comes in here asking question in the blind and not using
there noodle to "try" and figure it out well they (or me) should be
  put on the spot.
It is ok to ask, "hey I have no idea how to do this" but listen to
  the answer.
If you don't get it always restate what you though the answer was
and say "did you mean this".

I chose the tech field because the chemicals of 16 years of
finishing have eaten at my brain and lungs. And though a desk job
with clean air and a place to exercise what little brain I have left
would be good. So if i can still learn anyone should be able to learn this
  stuff.

Also INFORMATION is free or should be on the NET.
There is so much info on the tech stuff it is not funny. But you
have to put effort in to learning.
"Only the young should be spoon feed and at some point the need to pick
up the fork and stick it in."

BUT I have to go on record:
I really have not seen any one degrade or made fun of, but if you
are put on the spot I fell it has been because you (or me) have not
  followed simple logic/common sense.

Sorry this is even being posted but I though it good to have a point
of view from a growing newbie.

If anyone feels I am out of my mind, you are right, email me, curse if
you want. I have very thick skin and fell all are due a opinion. But
facts are always right. And the fact is some of the post lately
show that the poster should put more time in to research. IMHO.

Tips i got from Unix admin who talked me to this crazy career. Oh
he still thinks i am dumb for using M$. Anyways.

  1. Learn OSI model in depth, learn DNS, TCP/IP, Protoclos!!!!!!!!!!!
  2. Read the manuals/helps/text books, read RFC's!!!!!
  3. Learn to search correctly!!
  4. use newsgroups!!
  5. Learn the short hand/speak of the web. IMHO AFIK LoL !
  6. Test stuff, break it fix it. Nothing beats hands on!!!!
  7. You will never know everything about everything, so don't try. But know enough to
ask serious questions or say i have no clue befors you look dumb!!
