context: well over 99+ % of all messages transit IMGate in under 10 seconds. (time to receive and queue, plus time to deliver and delete from queue)

For those msgs that get deferred, I have IMGate's "queue lifetime" set to just 2 hours. I get no complaints, and it keeps the IMGate deferred queue to an acceptably small quantity and keeps IMGAte from beating its ahead against a brick wall. We got other things to do.

I consider this a service to the the sender. :))

I also have the "max bounce size" to truncate the returned message at about 5 Kbytes, IIRC, so IMgate doesn't get saddled with bouncing back messages that originally arrived with 100's of Kbytes or 10's of Mbytes.

BOFH rules apply at all times!!
