I consulted the KB, and my client and I went through every one of the designated placeholders. When we got to * it finally worked. Don't know why, but it's working now ;)

Given Stanley's note, it would seem like the answer lies elsewhere. Do
a network trace (or look at and post your IMail logs) so you know what
is actually being transmitted.
