The server is usually passive and just waits for commands from the SMTP client, or if total silence from the client, times out and hangs up unilaterally. IMGate/postfix can be set to hangup abruptly in the face of repeated protocol violations, or excessive 5xx or 4xx codes sent to the client. I set the thresholds very low, 3 errors and hangup, and the inactivity timeout at 15 secs. >because it sure sounds like something we need to implement. We're up to >over 12k users after 1 week online. The spam keeps on givin'and growin'. A lot of spammers just send one msg per session, so the hangup tactic doesn't work. But a lot of spammers try to send several dozen msgs in the same session, hoping that some recipients are accepted. From your brief description, it's not too clear if the unilateral hangup tactic would make any difference.
