The second method (not a hack, IMO) would certainly be recommended for
future  manageability,  plus a temporary alias for the old ID pointing
to the new one.

You  can't  do this when using the IMail default database, essentially
because  the  Win32  API  does  not  support the necessary rename as a
one-step  process.  It could be added, certainly, but has never been a
priority.
