1.) What changes to the default value of queue timer and nr of tries are
recommended?

On IMGate, I run 2 hours max queue lifetime, with a "delivery delay warning" at 1 hour. I also truncate the returned message to 5 Kb.

It's not very friendly to sit on a msg for 2+ days and the bounce it as undeliverable. Nothing is lost, the sender can always resend it.
