A "dictionary attack" is when a spammer tries sending to lots of made-up addresses at your domain, with the hopes that you will accept some of them -- that way, they find out valid E-mail addresses on your server.we have our relaying set to Relay for Address but we have been hit the last couple days with dictionary attacks to AOL though our server... How can someone send mail through our server with an Ip that we have not allowed!!!!
An "open relay" is a mailserver that lets anyone in the world send E-mail to anywhere in the world (which allows spammers to use you to do their dirty work).
However, since a dictionary attack sends mail to *your* users, the relay settings do not apply (since mail to your users isn't relaying). So no relay settings will prevent a dictionary attack. If you search the archives, you should find some ideas as to how you can handle this.
