I KNOW it's bad practice but this was for testing purposes only.




If the server is connected to the Internet, spammers won't care if the 
server is just for testing purposes...




I checked "Relay for Addresses" put in the IP address range and subnet,
restarted the SMTP service and sat back and watched as our clients' servers
connected to see what happened. OH NO!!!! Every single message bounced back
to the client with an "Invalid User" message.




Are you sure that the IP range was set up properly, and that your users 
were all coming from that IP range?




What was even worse was that the ORDB test comes from all sorts of different
IP addresses and the server connected to every one during the test.




Um, does that mean that you are trying to cheat, and block ORDB (as if they 
were a spammer)?  If you run an open relay and they catch you trying to 
block them, you risk getting an eternal entry.  That means that even once 
you are no longer an open relay, you may still end up blacklisted.




My questions are:

1. Why didn't the server relay the messages, do I need to set up
domains/users on this server to be able to relay or what?




With "Relay for Addresses", anyone from the IP range(s) you specify should 
be able to send outgoing E-mail.




2. Why did the server allow IP addresses outside of the range to connect?




Because it is supposed to -- otherwise, those IPs wouldn't be able to send 
mail to any users that have accounts on your server.  In this case, there 
aren't any users on the server, but that isn't important (the "Relay for 
Addresses" setting just lets you determine who can relay E-mail).  If the 
mailserver doesn't accept any E-mail, you can use the SMTP "Control Access" 
file to only allow certain IPs to connect.
