mind you my spool directory was now 2 gb and nearly 500k files
this is your key statement. 500K files are related to messages received by the IMail SMPTD server.

Either the messages are addressed to your domain (this is a mail bomb) or the messages are not addressed to your domain (and you are an open relay).

... have you ever tried to delete that many files in Win2k? you can't, you can't delete the directory, you need to del *.* and wait 12, yes TWELVE HOURS to clean it up.
no OS sparkles with 500K items under one node.
