OK, I now have a definitive explanation. I just talked to Sprint, who is our backbone provider, and they said they have started "null routing" open mail relays due to the explosively growing SPAM problem.So cool! If Sprint won't carry your mail traffic, you're in serious pain. May this precedent be mirrored by all the major network operators.
Would you believe it? : There's a guy in the ISP-* lists who argues with apparent intelligence and conviction ad nauseam 1) that open relays are not a problem and 2) that SMTP AUTH doesn't work. :))
Also, MS might even do something good in the world, strictly by happy collateral accident, not by any act of good will or pro bono :
