Subject: [IMail Forum] Please check your MX records to make sure that
backup mailservers accept your mail

A *lot* of IMail users have a very serious DNS problem, that causes people
to think they have gone out of business!

Please take the time now to make sure that you do not have this problem.

I know you think this doesn't apply to you. However, we have a tool that
makes it very easy to see if you have this problem. Just go to
http://www.DNSreport.com and enter your E-mail address (or any E-mail
address on your domain -- "postmaster@" is fine) in the "Mail Test" box on
the right side of the screen, and it will let you know if this problem (or
one of several others) applies to you.

Specifically, many domains are set up with a primary MX record and one or
more backup MX records. This is a good practice -- but only if the
backup(s) accept your E-mail. In many cases, they do not. Several times a
week we have E-mail that is sent to IMail customer bounce with a "no such
user" message because of this problem (we're smart enough to find out that
there really *is* a user with that address, but few Internet users know how
to check).

If your backup mailserver(s) do not accept your mail, the problem is much,
much worse than having just a primary MX record. With just a primary MX
record, if your primary mailserver is down, most mail will get delivered
when it is back up (with a small percentage of mail possibly bouncing with
a "Host temporarily not reachable" message). With bogus secondary MX
records, people sending you mail will see "No such user", which implies
that the E-mail address is no longer valid. In the case of sales@ or
info@, people will probably think you have gone out of business.

                                                    -Scott
